Breast Cancer Awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
I read a entry on Amanda aka Twinks Myspace and was amazed by her strength. I am dedicating this blog entry to her. She is a true survivor!

Some facts on Breast Cancer.....

One in eight women or 12.6% of all women will get breast cancer in her lifetime.

Breast cancer risk increases with age and every woman is at risk.

Every 13 minutes a woman dies of breast cancer.

Seventy-seven percent of women with breast cancer are over 50.

Approximately 1400 cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in men in 2000 and 400 of those men will die.

More than 1.7 million women who have had breast cancer are still alive in the United States.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women between the ages of 15 and 54, and the second cause of cancer death in women 55 to 74.

Seventy-one percent of black women diagnosed with breast cancer experience a five-year survival rate, while eighty-six percent of white women experience five-year survival.

The first sign of breast cancer usually shows up on a woman's mammogram before it can be felt or any other symptoms are present.

Risks for breast cancer include a family history, atypical hyperplasia, delaying pregnancy until after age 30 or never becoming pregnant, early menstruation (before age 12), late menopause (after age 55), current use or use in the last ten years of oral contraceptives, and daily consumption of alcohol.

Early detection of breast cancer, through monthly breast self-exam and particularly yearly mammography after age 40, offers the best chance for survival.

Ninety-six percent of women who find and treat breast cancer early will be cancer-free after five years.

Over eighty percent of breast lumps are not cancerous, but benign such as fibrocystic breast disease.

Oral contraceptives may cause a slight increase in breast cancer risk; however 10 years after discontinuing use of oral contraceptives the risk is the same as for women who never used the pill.

Estrogen replacement therapy for over 5 years slightly increases breast cancer risk; however the increased risk appears to disappear 5-10 years after discontinuing the use of estrogen replacement therapy.

You are never too young to develop breast cancer! Breast Self-Exam should begin by the age of twenty.

Symtoms of breast cancer....

In the early stages, breast cancer may not be painful and there may be no symptoms at all. As the cancer grows, you may start to notice changes in the breast or underarm, such as a lump.

Signs and symptoms of breast cancer can include the following:

  • Lumps. Breast cancer lumps vary and may be hard or soft and have rounded or uneven edges.
  • Swelling of part of the breast
  • Skin irritation or dimpling
  • Nipple pain or the nipple turning inward
  • Redness or scaliness of the nipple or breast skin
  • Nipple discharge other than breast milk
  • A lump in the underarm area

REMEMBER: These signs and symptoms do not necessarily mean that you have breast cancer. However, you should tell your doctor right away about any lump in the breast or underarm area and any changes in the skin of the breast, nipple, or areola (the area around the nipple).

5 steps to your monthly breast self-exam

1. In the shower. Raise your right arm. Use the finger pads of your left hand to touch every part of your right breast. Feel gently for any lumps or changes under the skin. Then raise your left arm and use your right hand to examine your left breast.

2. Before a mirror. Place your arms at your sides. Check both breasts for anything unusual — discharge, puckering, dimpling, or changes in skin texture. Clasp your hands behind your head and look carefully for any changes in the shape or contour of your breasts. Gently squeeze both nipples and look for discharge.

3. Lying down. Lie flat on your back, with your left arm over your head and a pillow under your left shoulder. Put your left hand behind your head. Use your right hand to begin touching your left breast gently but firmly.

4. Start in your armpit. Start in your armpit and move down to just below your breast. Now move your fingers and move up again. Continue this up-and-down pattern until you have covered the area.

5. Standing up. Rest your arm on a firm surface and use the same up-and- down motion to examine the area between the breast and the underarm, and the underarm itself.

This self-exam is not a substitute for periodic examinations by a qualified physician. Report any lumps or changes to your physician.

Finding breast cancer at an early stage greatly improves the chances of successful treatment. Screening for breast cancer refers to tests and examinations used to detect the disease in women who do not have any symptoms. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), early detection of breast cancer saves many thousands of lives each year, and it is important to take advantage of these screening tests. Some screening tests used for early detection of breast cancer include:

  • Mammography
  • Clinical breast exam
  • Monthly breast self-exam

If screening identifies an abnormality in your breast, the next step is diagnosis, in which your doctor determines if breast cancer is present.

In this section, you will learn how cancer is detected and diagnosed and how to understand your test results.

Field Trip

Today i went with my daughter on a field trip to Cave Hill Cemetery. Yeah i know a cemetery...but it was really cool.
We did sort of a scavanger hunt to find things on headstones like doves, wreaths, ancors and stuff that u might find on old headstones. We let the kids look at the date of birth and the date of death and let the figure out how old the person was.
Then the kids got to take this thin paper and lay on top of a headstone of either someone famous or someone with the same last name or birthday. It was really fun. We did not get to  do everything we had planned because of the time. It was really fun beieve it or not.
School is out Friday,Saturday,Sunday,Monday and Tuesday. So i think we will be going back a couple of them day to be able to explore more. The place is huge. I have alot of pics from today but for some reason msn has not let me add any new pics forever....thanks msn i appreciate that!lol
Sorry i have not been updating and returning all comments but i have been working at one of the schools and i am even making them a website....cool huh? lol
Hope all is well in yalls world and have a great weekend !
Til next time

Just found out today all the children were stabbed multiple times...

Happy Birthday Daddy

I wrote this last year for my Dad's birthday on my other space. So today i just copied and pasted it here.

This is a poem that Dee aka Lady Sprite gave me last year at this time....Thanks girlie!

I came across this today and felt it may help with Adrianna and Dads passing...

My Mom is a surviivor,
Or so I've heard it said.
But I can hear her crying at night
When all others are in bed.

I watch her lay awake at night
And go to hold her hand.
She doesn't know I'm here
To help her understand.

But like the sand on the beach,
That never wash away...
I watch over my surviving mom,
Who thinks of me each day.

She wears a smile for others...
A smile of disguise!
But through Heaven's door I see
Tears flowing from her eyes.

My Mom tries to cope with death
To keep my memory alive.
But anyone who knows her, knows
It is her way to survive.

As I watch over my surviving Mom
Through Heaven's open door...
I try to tell her that Angels
Protect me forever more.

I know that doesn't help her
Or ease the burden that she bears
So if you get a chance, go visit her...
and show her that you care.

For no matter what she says...
No matter what she feels
My Mom has a broken Heart
That time won't ever heal.
My Mom is a survivor!

Daughter to father poems .

A Little Girl Needs Daddy poem

A little girl needs Daddy
For many, many things:
Like holding her high off the ground
Where the sunlight sings!
Like being the deep music
That tells her all is right
When she awakens frantic with
The terrors of the night.

Like being the great mountain
That rises in her heart
And shows her how she might get home
When all else falls apart.

Like giving her the love
That is her sea and air,
So diving deep or soaring high
She'll always find him there

                         I MISS

              I miss your special light,
               your shoulder to cry on,
                       your smile,
                      your jokes,
and you making fun of me,
                   I miss you a lot.

                  I miss your hugs,
                      your kisses,
                    your warmth,
                 your kind heart,
                       your love,
                 your selflessness,
                  I miss you a lot.

                I miss a great man,
                   a great father,
                    a best friend,
                  I miss you a lot.

                 I miss our talks,
                      our drives,
                      our walks,
              our Christmas together,
             our phone conversations,
                         our time,
                  I miss you a lot.

(But your special light shines on,
in me and in all the people
                that ever loved you.
               And they are a lot).

He Must Have Life

by Sharon

I don't wish for death to ease his pain
I am too selfish for that
He must have life

I must be able to hear of his life
He must continue to call me
I need to see his beautiful baby blues
sparkle and shine

I don't want to just remember these things

Even in his pain they sparkle and shine

I need him to be here to show me who I am
To show me where I came from
If he left, part of me would leave
I would be someone different

I need to touch and hug him
To let him know how important he is

I don't want to remember these things
To feel the pain that I will feel
when my memories of him start to fade

I want him here with us
I want him here with no pain
I love you, my Dad

All through my troubled and sad childhood,
through my rebellious adolescence and through adulthood,
I always knew that you loved me

I hope you knew that I always loved you too
